While there are many fine companies doing business on the internet there are also quite a few that take advantage of the anonymity and complexity and make a lot of hollow claims.
Many of the claims and promises are either rendered meaningless in the fine print, or don't mean much in the first place.
Most headlines of "unlimited bandwidth" or "unlimited disk-space" don't actually offer these things after you read the fine print. Claims of 99-cent domain registration while maybe true are usually misleading and primarily intended to "trap" you into their services which are hard to get out of and end up costing a lot more than you thought.
The reality is no one can assure you of uninterrupted service, and big promises with no recourse don't really mean much. For example:
- In July 2012 Twitter went off-line when all redundant systems failed.
- September 10th 2012 Go-Daddy had more intermittent outages
- In 2011 Citibank exposed credit card information for over 36,000 customers.
- Playstation, Blackberry, Amazon.com, Microsoft and others all had service outages or had been hacked just in 2011.
- The Pentagon computer system has been hacked.
Since we can not absolutely assure you that your data will be safe or that your site won't ever go down, we don't claim we can, then bury all the "exceptions" in pages of fine print. We only offer you what is possible.
What we offer is that your website, email or other services are hosted in the same technical environment that we use ourselves. It is hosted in a first class data center (Linode.com) and complete backups of everything are made once a day. Everyday everything is backed-up to a second data center that is geographically separate and is operated by a completely different business entity. We choose not to mislead you with outrageous claims, then rely on the probability that you won't read all the pages of fine print.
We have been operating in this manner since 2011 with an over 99.96% up-time record. We take all precautions that seem to make sense and we monitor the systems diligently using human beings and software watchdogs. We expect this reliability to continue.
